Pull Data from Cells based upon User Input

I am looking for assistance on the best route to go with regards to a project I am working on. I am the Candidate Staff Ride Coordinator for my Army Officer Candidate School Staff Ride to Gettysburg.

I am trying to create a formula or function that will take user input from one cell and pull cell content from other cells based on that user input. The content pulled from the cells would then be added together to produce a total in another cell.

I have a worksheet that contains numerous menu items, their associated costs, as well as a control number assigned to each menu item. What I would like to do is be able to type multiple control numbers into one cell and have the associated prices pulled and added together along with several fixed costs to produce a final total cost.

My problem is I know enough about formulas and functions to be a danger to myself if unsupervised .

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

You are the General of Noun Chains.

    How about a (workbook) example?
