converting a list of dates to serial numbers so my vlookup will work

I have a list of 1000+ dates such as 11/15/2009.

My vlookup doesn't work unless it's formatted in serial format.

I can go cell by cell, clicking in each and hitting ctrl + ~ to make it work, but that will take forever.

Is there a shortcut that I can just highlight all the cells and accomplish the same thing?

Select the column, Data > Text to columns, Finish
Entia non sunt multiplicanda sine necessitate

VLOOKUP does work with date format.

    Try it like this:

    =VLOOKUP(--"3/12/2010",table array,column index num,FALSE)
