donanton ,
As far as i know you cannot freeze a single cell or a range of cells.
You could , as you already wrote ,freeze rows , columns or both at the same time.
You can't freeze one cell onscreen while all the others can scroll.
You can use an odd feature called the "Camera Tool" to create a floating picture of a cell's value and put that anywhere you want.
1. Select the range (one cell or several)
2. Choose Edit - Copy
3. Press the Shift key and choose Edit - Paste Picture Link (this command is available only when the Shift key is pressed).
4. The result is a linked picture of the original range. You can move this picture anywhere you like.
Camera: Takes a linked picture of the current selection and pastes it in a new location. The picture is linked by a formula that refers to the copied cells, so it is updated when the copied cells change. Click the Camera button to take the picture, and then click where you want to paste the upper-left corner of the selection.

thanks guys, but the floating option isn't going to be usable since I could always drag the cells i wanted to freeze anyway.
Having other options doesn't make the camera tool unusable, it just makes it an unused option. We all have to make those choices.
Sorry there isn't something to help here.
Hello Jbeaucaire
Where can i find the camera tool in excel 2007?
Thanks
As you can see across from my name, I use Excel 2003.
But Googling "Excel Camera Tool 2007" brings up all the info you need.

hi Donanton,
Another option could be to use the "Watch Window" which you can look up in the Excel Help files. I'm reasonably sure that the functionality exists in Excel 2003 & it may be of use as long as you don't have too many cells that you want to "watch".

Always learning & the best way to learn is to experience...
1. Right-click on the QAT (Quick Access Toolbar) at top of screen (small icons to the right of the Office orb).
2. Select 'Customize Quick Access Toolbar...'
3. Change the 'Choose Commands from' dropdown to 'Commands Not in the Ribbon'
4. Scroll down until you see 'Camera', select it and click the 'Add > >' button to add it to your QAT.
5. Click OK
Google is your friend
Follow these steps to add the Camera tool to the QAT:
1. Click the Office icon in the upper-left corner of Excel.
2. Select the Excel Options button to activate the Excel Options dialog box.
3. Click the Customize button.
4. In the Choose Commands From drop-down list, select Commands Not in the Ribbon.
5. Scroll down the alphabetical list of commands and find Camera; double-click to add it to QAT.
6. Click OK to close the Excel Options dialog box.
When you've taken these steps, you'll see the Camera tool icon in your Quick Access Toolbar. Not surprisingly, the icon for the Camera tool looks like a camera.
