    Condensing data automatically

    Hi,

I have a lot of data I have to process and would like to know a way to condense it automatically. The deal is that I want to calculate the average of certain numbers that have the same label. I guess if you take a look at the xls attached you will understand better, I can't explain better than this.

If someone knows a way to do this automatically, please reply!

    Thanks

IN Excel 2007, I believe the formula you want is AVERAGEIF(). Press F1 and read up on that function.

    thanks for your reply...

in fact, averageif is exactly the tool I need, there's just one problem though: I need to get the criteria field to work with cells, that is, I want the criteria to make reference to a cell. Eg. "=H5" - not the string H5, but the cell H5

    any way to do this?

That's how all the IF() formulas work, they compare a range of cells to a single cell. You can use a "string" in place of the single cell, or you can use a cell reference.

I'm sure the help file cover all the variations.

If that takes care of your need, please click EDIT in your original post, click GO ADVANCED and set the PREFIX box to SOLVED.
