We need a formula in F4 to match the name in F2 with the drivers listed in column B and return their place of finish in column A

Try:

=INDEX($A$2:$A$11,MATCH(F2,$B$2:$B$11,0))

if you always have numerically sequenced numbers in A2:A11 from 1,2,3, etcc..

then just =MATCH(F2,$B$2:$B$11,0) returns the position within the range of your lookup value...
