    Combination formula

    Hi there,

I hope you clever Excel guys can help me.

I need to find a way to contain all possible combination/ permutation of 11 items, hopefully by using some sort of formula.

So, in more detail, I have a list of 11 items that I currently have in a drop down list, using a data validation list. But that only covers one item in one instance. I need to be able to potentially select all 11, or just 3 of them or a different set of 3 of them etc etc.

The only thing that i have been able to do so far, is to add the extraneous items onto separate rows, but that throws out my reporting.

If anyone has any idea on how to tackle it, i would be most grateful, as I am tearing my hair out with this!!

    Cheers
    Angela

    Re: Combination formulas needed!

So you have a set of 11 items and you want all combinations of sets of 3 from that set? Or you want to be able to choose combinations of sets of 3 from 11 items?

There are 165 combinations (if order doesn't matter) or 990 permutations (if order matters).

    Re: Combination formula

    Hi ChemistB

I actually need excel to return every single permutation of all 11 in the set. Sorry, I am terrible at explaining this type of thing :s

Any info will be really gratefully received.

    Re: Combination formula

do you mean combinations or permutations? there starts to be a lot as eg any 5 from 11 permutations is 55440 whereas there are only 462 combinations

    Re: Combination formula

I realised that I was over complicating things, and have opted for a different way of solving this. Thanks anyway.
