Excel is suddenly running very slow

In the last day or two, I have noticed that it takes forever to do very basic functions in Excel. And by basic I mean VERY basic, like hit the right arrow to move from C1 to D1. I thought it was the network connection but I copied the worksheet locally and it does the same thing. I never had any problems copying large amounts of data but now it takes forever. I'm not running any macros and there are very few formulas (And they weren't a problem before).

Is there any specific list of things to look for so I can see what is slowing everything down? I cleared the clipboard and that didn't help at all. This is very frustrating.

    Couple things to check -

How long is your Autosave set too?
How many external connections do you have set?
    - If any, what is the refresh time of each connection
How large (MB wise) is the worksheet?

    Edit:

Also do you have any other office products open, like Powerpoint, that may have ecxel docs embedded?

    I should mention it's 2007.

    Autosave - 10 Minutes
External Connections - Where do I find this information?
    Size - 13 MB
I have zero office products open

    Data -> Connections

The size is not all that bad.

Do you have any Rand(), Vlookup(), If() statements?

And how many rows is your biggest data set.

    I have zero connections.

It's 8 tabs with one large, consolidated tab of the first 7 (30,000 rows) and a VLOOKUP in each of the first 7 tabs (between 4000 and 6000 rows each). The 8th tab is values only. I understand that the 8th tab is likely part of the problem but this has never been a problem before.

It might be your Vlookup, depending how large the lookup table is.

Go to Formulas -> Calculations -> Calculation options and just turn that on manual for a second.

Try running some basic operations and let me know if the lagging stopped (don't forget to turnt he automatic calculations back on)

I changed a bunch of numbers in text format to general format and copied it locally. That has helped greatly. So has the calculation options idea. Thanks.

The problem is back. Even after copying it locally and deleting a tab to literally cut the size of the file in half. I am trying to convert columns from text to general to reduce the size and that is taking forever, as well. Like I mentioned before, I have NEVER had a problem with this file in past weeks. Is there a problem with Excel itself?

It might be Excel, or a setting changed where you are meeting maximum memory usage, but it sounds unlikely since you copied the file to a local machine.

My next attempt would be to copy and paste each tab manualy into a new workbook, and see with the new workbook open at which point the file slows down. Also, this is not a macro enabled workbook correct? Just in case something is prompted to run in the back ground.

No formula looks for anything on a server or another file correct? (I think we have deduced this is not true)

Lastly I would run a virus check on your computer and see if anything comes up.

Also, if you have a chance, email the file to another person and open it on another machine and another instance of Excel and see if the problem persists.

    hi

Are your formulae referring to entire columns?
If so, try limiting them to the used range. If the used range is likely to change consider using a "dynamic named range".

What happens if you press [ctrl + end] on each of the sheets?

For some other general tips have a read of Dave Mcritchie's page: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/slowresp.htm

I also had the same problem.

What worked for me was disabling hardware graphics acceleration. (File > Options > Advanced > Display > and then TICK "Disable hardware graphics acceleration".

I don't know what caused the problem, but i just realised one day that it was now very slow, even to just work on a blank worksheet. All the other Office 365 apps were working ok...

    Hope this helps

Although I suspect for me, what could have changed the graphics setting could be this shortcut on the Excel task bar at the bottom Attachment 760105

    Simba Mag,

I cannot thank you enough for your post. I have tried so many of the other suggestions but nothing worked until now. My spreadsheet went from being stuck in molasses to Turbo Mode.

How in the world did you ever figure this out?

    With much gratitude,

    DJ
