Your dates are stored as text.
Select the column, Data > Text to columns, Finish.
Then sort.

Most likely cause of the issue is that your "dates" are, in fact, text that appear to be dates. In Excel, dates are serial numbers and all numbers in Excel are automatically right aligned when using the default horizontal alignment. Widen the column holding the dates and if they are aligned on the left then you have text and not a date.
To remedy this and convert then, enter a zero into any blank cell, copy that cell then select then entire range of date cells, right-click and choose Paste Special > Add.
The text should convert to dates and then allow you to sort as required.
