Split data from a single column to plot a two-line chart

    I'm STUCK!

This is the first time I've tried charts in xl 2007, and I'm not getting it easily.

    The chart needs:

    1. A Y-axis of dates (in mm/dd/yyy) format (There are duplicate dates in this list as well as large gaps)
    2. An X-axis with a scale from 0 to 100%

    Here's the trouble.

Column A represents the employees' hire date.
Column B represents their percentage in the whole list of people (guy hired first is 0%, last guy is 100%..you get the idea).
Column C has a mark beside the employees that came from a different company but are now part of the whole list.

I WANT TO: be able to go down all the different dates of hire (in chronological ascending order) in the Y-axis and look across to see their percentage (percentage of position in the whole group). This would require the top date to be the oldest and the bottom date to be the newest.

HOWEVER: I want one line to represent each group--that way a person from group #1 can find their date of hire and look across to see their position on the totum pole quickly.

Here is a sample of the excel table and an idea I drew of what I'm after:

Re: Need a GURU to help put two lines on a chart and share some data in the process.

Please take a few minutes to reread the forum rules, and then amend your thread title accordingly.

    Thanks.

Re: Can I split up data from a single column to plot a two-line chart?

You can use an xy-scatter to plot the data.

You will need to use formula to construct 2 sets of xy-data based on whether the record is a G2 or not.

Use a 3rd series to plot the axis labels.

I have also added minus x error bars to link data point to axis.

Andy, can you explain the "minus x error bars"? I've tried duplicating your example, and I'm just getting a filled area beneath the plotted lines--there are no markers for the data points either.

How did you put the dates on the y-axis? I don't show them as part of the chart range or in any series?

    Thanks.

Without seeing what you have I can not say what the issue with the error bars is. But these are the steps I used.

    Select data series.
Chart Tools > Layout > Error Bars > More Options.
    Delete Y error bars
    Select X error bars
Format X error bars to be Minus only using 100%, no cap.

There is a 3rd series in the chart with zero X values and Y values to match the dates. I then used this free add-in to link data labels to cells.

I figured out the error bars. No problem. That add-on for the chart labeler was exactly what I was confused about. Thanks!

I'll post back if I get stuck.

    Thanks again.
