Formatting Cells in Regards to Numbers

I have Macro's set up to run a bunch of data and combine some cells which will result in a number like 8-9. The issue I have is that the number will show as Aug-9 when I need it to say 8-9 because I reference that cell. I tried to format all of the cells to text number format in the spreadsheet then ran my Macro. This did not work because I use =A1&"-"&A2 to combine the cells and in formatting the cells as text it doesn't produce the number I need.

Are you looking for a "text" representation?

    What about using:

    =MONTH(A1)&"-"&DAY(A2)
Where there is a will there are many ways.

You'd be better off retaining the number as an Excel date and modifying the macros accordingly.
