Autofill not recognizing a pattern correctly

    Hi,

I am having a strange problem with Excel 2007, and I'm not really sure how to fix it.

If I create a column that goes from 0, 1, 2, ... (by dragging so that it puts all the numbers in for me) and then create another column so that each cell is equal to every third cell of the first column, dragging to finish the second column doesn't work right. It's hard to explain, but I hope that my screenshots (attached) will give you the idea. The "excelgood" is what I want it to do, which I have to do manually. The "excelbad" is what it does automatically when I drag the column.

Also, I have tried different positioning for the columns, and tried making them rows, and no matter where the columns (or rows) are, it does the same thing.

Anyway, this is what I am trying to do (where each cell in the second column would read "=[Cell in First Column]"

    Re: Strange problem

I apologize for not reading them beforehand, and have fixed my post to comply.

Also, I forgot to mention before that the info I posted is not my actual situation. It is merely the simplest form of the same problem I am having in my actual situation.

    Much better, thank you.

You'd be more likely to get a usefule response by posting a workbook that shows what you have and what you want, so we don't have to decode the BUAG.

Ok I have created a workbook that shows what my problem is, and it shows a solution that I came up with that is hopefully only temporary. What I found to be a solution was

Where x, y, and z are all constants in the formula. I would really prefer to avoid having to use constants, as I don't think it's a very good practice (I'm from a programming, mostly C#, background, so maybe because of that I am worrying about it too much?) Basically my problem now is that it is not generic (because of the constants) and it is relatively complicated considering the actual situation (which is easier to see in the workbook.)

BTW, I am willing to learn how to use VB in Excel if that's the only way, although personally I hate VB's clunky syntax, and it's been a LONG time since I've done anything in VB. As a side question, does excel's VB have access to the entire .NET library? Or does it only use certain references? And what version(s) of .NET are available?

EDIT: Ignore column K in Sheet1. I didn't mean to have that there. And there are explanations of everything in the workbook itself.
