Data overridden on all sheets by one sheet

I had a workbook with 7 worksheets, all with different data, on Fri July 9. I saved and closed the workbook in the usual way. I have been working with Excel for over 10 years. The sheets were not linked.

On Monday, July 10, when I opened the file I saw that the data that had been on sheet 6 is now on sheets 1-5 as well, and all the original data on 1-5 has disappeared.


How can I retrieve what was on sheets 1-5?

(for some reason Sheet 7 was unaffected, but when created what is now sheet 6 I had placed it between the original sheet five and the original sheet six (so the old six became sheet 7)

...By copying the data from a recent backup. Probably no other way.


This happened to me once, turned out I had accidentally "grouped" sheets by selecting the tabs together and didn't notice it, all the changes I was making on one sheet was going to several sheets. Fortunately, I had a recent backup.

have you maybe emailed the workbook to anyone? If you have you might have a copy in your sent items
