    Add data to chart

I'm sure this is a very basic question.

I have an Excel 2007 chart. The chart uses data from one line of the spreadsheet for the x-axis label, and uses to other rows from the spreadsheet as two data 'series', plotted on the graph.

I recently added another column of data to the spreadsheet, and cannot figure out how to get the chart to reflect the additional data points.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

Right click anywhere in the chart and hit Select Data. Click on Add.

Re: Trying to adde more data to a chart

    hi bentleybob -

    Thanks for the reply.

I have tried what you suggested many times, always without joy, which obviously means that I'm doing something wrong.

    Here's what I've tried.

    1. right-click on chart and choose 'select data'. This gives me the 'Select Data Source' dialog box.
    2. In the Select Data Source dialog box, I have my two data sets listed in the 'Legend Entries' box and my months (x-axis labels) are listed in the 'Horizontal Axis Label's box.
    3. The only 'Add' button that I see is for the 'Legend Entries'.
    4. If I press 'Add', I get an 'Edit Series' dialog box which has 'Series name' and 'Series value' fields. Presumably, this is for my first data series, the one that is selected in the Select Data Source dialog box by default.
    5. I click on the icon just to the right of 'Series values', which causes the Edit Series dialog box to shrink down to a single edit box.
    6. I select the entire row corresponding to my first data series, including the new column of data.
    7. I click 'OK' in the Edit Series dialog box.
    8. I now have a 3rd data series in my chart, which is not what I wanted.

I'm sure that I'm misunderstanding your directions.

    Re: Add data to chart

My mistake. I thought you had your data in columns and you wanted to add another series. You apparently have your data in a row. If your data series didn't automatically update to include the new column (for example, if you added the column before the first data point or after the last), then you can still get to the data by right clicking on the chart and hitting select dsata. But then you want to use Edit and then, in the bottom line, make sure your "series values" include all columns in the range.

Thanks! I now have it working.

Say, can I get a ride in your car sometime? ;-)

Thanks very much for your help.

Sure, let me know next time you're in Seattle.

    Glad your chart is working.
