Conditional Formatting on Dates

Afternoon (or morning),

I'm trying to insert conditional formatting into a cell. The cell pulls through a date from another worksheet using VLOOKUP - if the date is in the past I want the cell to be filled red and the text changed to bold white to display the date. I've got that part to work, but if the date is missing it still formats the cell - which I don't want it to do! How do I put a condition such as that in?
