Center Across Selection - Vertical option?

Is there a way to "center across selection" in a vertical column? I do not want to merge cells and I'd really prefer not to use text boxes....

    No there is not...

you can select several cells and change background colour to match your spreadsheet background (probably white) so that the gridlines don't show, then type in the middle cell to get the effect....

Thanks for the responses...that's too bad that there is no equivalent.
