    Random Pairs

    Hello,
I'm looking to create a spreadsheet that creates random pairs of people. I want to have two lists of people for example: I want to do a random coed tournament. so I have the following lists:

    Men
    John
    Dave
    Dan
    Nate
    Rory

    Women
    Britt
    Paige
    Kristen
    Heather
    Kelly

    A________B_______C
    TEAMS___Man___Woman
    Team 1
    Team 2
    Team 3
    Team 4
    Team 5

What formula would I use to put in the cell(or cells) to create the random pair? I want it to be a simulated way of not putting names in a hat.

    Thanks for any help!!!!

    Re: Random Pairs

this uses the RAND function along with the LARGE, MATCH and INDEX.

Note that due to the volatile nature of the RAND function the list will change on opening and calculations. So if you want to keep a record you will need to copy/paste values to some other location.

    Good afternoon golfer2b

Something like the attached will "redraw" teams every time the button is clicked.

    Re: Random Pairs

I like the idea of using a button, that RAND function seemed really volatile. Now, how do I edit that button? This coed tournament could have up to 30 people in it, or it could have 16...how do I easily edit the ranges if I need to? Could I set up a range of up to 40 teams and then just click the button even if I only have 5 teams? How about if I have one group of ten people that need to be paired together but I don't have them separated by gender? For Example

    Dave
    John
    Dan
    Rory
    Nate
    Paige
    Kirsten
    Kelly
    Heather
    Britt

    TEAMS___Player A___Player B
    Team 1
    Team 2
    Team 3
    Team 4
    Team 5

    Re: Random Pairs

Here's another one for you to try.

It does your last request, and also has a variation on your first request. (I prefer to avoid buttons if possible.)

    Re: Random Pairs

To further clarify what I am looking for it is for running a two person team tournament with a random draw based on Skill level. We categorize everyone into either an A, B, or C player. An "A" Player gets matched with a "C" player and all the "B" players are thrown into a hat and matched at random.

So what I want to accomplish is to have a program that I can pull up and simply type people in as an A, B, or C player, have the A players matched randomly with the C and all the B players randomly paired. Each of these players have a score attached to them also, this only comes into effect once the team is matched up and they would get a total score which determines their ranking. I think I can do that part with some "sumif" formulas but I just want to cut out the random drawing of players that I have to do while everyone is waiting around to get the tournament started.

Thank you all so much for your patience...I really suck at explaining myself sometimes.

    Re: Random Pairs

    My fault, sorry

I put the file together on a 2007 machine and forgot that RANDBETWEEN isn't in 2003.

Rather than clutter the BB with errors I have changed the file in Post #5

    Apologies.

    [EDIT]

Didn't see Post #7 this just addresses Post #6

Can you post your workbook with what you have so far?
