For the sum of the numbers in a single cell i know you need to key in =12+15 to get the sum. But is there a way to format the cell so that all I need to is key in 12+15 and it automatically does the calculation?
Cheers

Welcome to the forum.
Formulas in Excel begin with =. For legacy compatibility, they can instead begin with + or -. That's it.

As shg has already outlined you can't do this without the use of VBA, a very basic example being:
to insert the above - right click on Tab against which this process is to be applied and select View Code pasting above into resulting window.Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range) Dim rngInterest As Range, vTemp As Variant Application.EnableEvents = False On Error Resume Next Set rngInterest = Intersect(Target, Range("A1:A1000")).SpecialCells(xlCellTypeConstants, xlTextValues) If Not rngInterest Is Nothing Then With Target vTemp = Evaluate(.Cells(1).Value) .Value = IIf(IsError(vTemp), .Value, vTemp) End With End If Set rngInterest = Nothing Application.EnableEvents = True End Sub
Thereafter in a Macro enabled file when an entry is made into the range specified (A1:A1000 - modify as required) the code will convert as appropriate.
