What type of chart/graph do I need?

I am creating a spreadsheet showing the port availability in a datacenter per row.

Each row has a different total of available ports.

I have only 2 data types I want to represent. Total ports available in a row, and total ports used in that row. I want to show the 2 data points in the same column the total showing 100% and the ports used climbing up that same column to whatever percentage it is of the total in that row.

For example I will say the Row C has 48 ports total available and 12 of those are in use. 48 should be the 100% mark for that column and the 12 would be represented as 25% of the total.

This is the first graph I have created in excel and can't seem to find something that will fit the bill

I need to show all rows in the datacenter and the percentage used of the total ports for each individual row in a single chart/graph.

Any help would save my bacon!! Thanks!

Can you upload a spreadsheet with some dummy data showing how your data is laid out?

    Hi Burning Sensation,

Welcome to the forum. You need to click on "Go Advanced" at the bottom of the quick reply message box to upload a file. Above the reply box (on the Advanced Messages) are more icons at this point. Click on the paper clip to open the upload window. This is just to the right of the icon. Browse to your file and and upload it. The file will then show as an attachment with your message.

Find attached a possible graph for your data. We can be a lot more help if we know what the data really looks like.

Is this type of chart possible?

In looking at the attached Example, can I stack Rick and Laura on top of each other? I would only want 3 different columns. It would show Rick and Laura in two different colors but stacked on top of each other. Then Gab and Mom would have their own seperate columns.

Re: What type of chart/graph do I need?

Use a bar chart with the bars overlapping 100%.

Also add a extra column that calculates the percentage. This can be used as the secondary axis labels and then displayed as data labels.

Plot the 3rd data series on the secondary axis.
Use the Select Data dialog to change 3rd series to use the calculated data as category labels. The plotted data is the Ports avaiable value.

The other 2 series have an overlap value of 100.
You need to use the select data dialog to reverse the plot order so actual data appears infront of the available data.

    Add the secondary vertical axis.
for both vertical axis set the Values in reverse order and crosses at Maximum in order for the labels to read top to bottom.

On a separate note if you are using xl2007 files can you update your profile to mention 2007 rather than 2003 as the change in application usage for charts is quite radical between the 2 versions.
