Excel 2007 : blocking access to certain cells based on previous cells

I am trying to build a form in excel 2007 and make it so that you can only fill in certain cells based on answers previously entered.


Basically I want a given cell to be protected or unprotected based on wether or not another cell has been used.

I assume this would be done using if statments but Im not sure.

any ideas?

In the absence of any other replies as yet ... it's not something I've come across.

You could probably do this fairly easily in VBA but (AFAIK) it would need a Worksheet event to monitor the contents of the "control" cell. The worksheet would have to be protected for the locked status of the cell to have any effect.

Hmm maybe I will just start by having the cells change colour when appropriate and see if that works or if I need to go further.

It all depends on what you are trying to do.

If you want to limit what is selected, you might be able to make use of dependent lists in Data Validation.

In this, you select entries from one list; each entry in that list has another list associated with it. In another cell you would have a selection which would be related to the option/list selected in the first cell.
