    Lock An Excel File

I wish to preserve an Excel Workbook. I know I could change the property in Windows Explorer on the file to "Read Only" but is there an easier, more permanent way to lock a file. I also am aware I could use protection within the file, but again, is there an easier more permanent way to do this. Thanks in advance for any advise you can offer.

Not sure what you mean by more permanent way......? Do you want people not to be able to open it or not change it? If you use Tools>General Options during the Save As, you can put a password on it so that only you can open it.

What I mean is to be able for anyone to open the file but for no one to save it. In other words it is like an archive file. Viewable by all but read-only by all.

I think protecting the worksheets with a password (Review>Protect sheet) is the best way to make sure that your worksheet will not be changed.
