    VLookup string matching

    Hello,

I am struggling with some excel formulas, trying to extract strings by matching other strings within the same cell. I have a spreadsheet that has variable number of rows with data and I need to find and match text in the row and extract a specific tread from the matching row.

For example, The following is examples of the row data (Starting in Column S and continuing on the row).

    Project 10:00 - 10:45
    Break 11:30 - 11:45
    Lunch 13:30 - 14:00
    Break 15:45 - 16:00

I need to search the row for the first instance of a cell with 'Break' and then return the first time (number) -- so for the example (assuming the entries above are in the same row it would return 11:30. I then, in another cell, need to search the row for the second instance of a cell with 'Break" and then return the last time (number) from the cell -- so for this it would return 16:00.

Since the values are not always in the same column within the row, I cannot seem to get a Lookup to work. Can anyone provide some guidance on how I can get this to work

    Re: VLookup string matching

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook, the workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook.

If needed supply a before and after sheet in the workbook so the person helping you can see what you are trying to achieve.

Doing this will ensure you get the result you need!

This is perfect. I will be able to modify to match existing spreadsheet formatting. Thank you so much!
