Help with counting with conditions and merged cells

    Hey Everybody!

I'm making a spreadsheet with requirements for med school entrance and I'm having trouble writing a formula.

Take a look at the attached excel. I'm trying to write a formula that would count if a med school requires a subject and then if it requires 1 semester of it, 2 semesters, or more than 2. Any help would be awesome!

    Thanks

Coulp you show the answer to a couple of cells of data and indicate how one would arrive at the count? not entirely clear from your sample
    Windows 7 using Office 2007 & 2010

Remember your [ code ] [ /code ] tags, makes reading soooo much easier

Yeah Absolutely! So for Example, in Medical school A General Chemistry is required (As indicated by the dot in the required row) and 2 semesters are required (as indicated by the number 2 in the semesters row). So I would want the formula to count that as 1 and then count the total number of school that have general chemistry required for 2 semesters. I attached what the actual values would be for each column with actual values in another upload.

If that still isn't clear let me know. I'm having troubles articulating exactly what I want.

    Thanks so much!
