Exclamation Excel calculated results are different than on a calculator....

I have a spreadsheet where my calculation ( results ) should be the same as if you were to calculate the same input as on a calculator.

    Example :

    Cell A = .351
    Cell B = 9.444
    Cell C = 34.444

    When I use the following formula : A / B*C = 1.28011 is my answer

When I calculate the same thing on a calculator my result is 1.28055

This gives me a variance of -0.044% which I cannot "use" because this can cause an incremental increase which I cannot allow for my calculations.

Is there any advice or guidance that anyone can give to help me with this? I basically need my numbers to "match" what will calc out on a calculator for those who do not have access to Excel. Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Maybe your calculator is at fault. I get exactly the same result with Excel and my Casio scientific calculator. viz. 1.280161372

I did a crazy thing. I did it by hand and got 1.280012.... I didn't take the calculations all the way out so some margin of error but closer to your excel value.

Note that the value in G6 is displayed in Excel as

    1.28056

But the actual underlying value is stored at a much higher precision.

    1.28055508474576

Excel is doing the aritmetic with the higher precision. To make Excel match the Casio (which means make the value in Excel match the value as formatted for display), change the formula in G6 to

    =ROUND(B6/D6*F6,5)

I apologize, but my goal is to make the total Volts calculate as per what the Casio calculator would normally state. You can see the difference in Cell O11 in comparison with K6, they are different. Thank you for your help!

is that not what =ROUND(B6/D6*F6,5) will do?

No apologies necessary Have you updated the formula in G6 with what I provided to see what the result will be?

The problem is in the problem specification. If you adjust your spreadsheet to keep 5 decimal places, but then someone comes along with a calculator that handles 9 places, then Excel won't match that calculator.

Thank you all for your help. I did round G6 as requested and this is fine. At the same time, I cannot deny that if someone came along with a hand calculator ( any one for that matter ), that it would come out to a different amount, albeit because of decimal places.
