making a word into a number

I am trying to work on a scheduling program. I want to use "cl" for people working until close. How can I make "cl" mean 3 am and complete the calculation of hours? I can get the military time to work as long as not after midnight? Any suggestions?

The program has start and finish times... and the next would be finish minus start.

    7:00 am 17:00 (5 pm) 10

but when I try to do this with after midnight I cant make it say the correct hours.

    19:00 (5pm) 3:00 ( 3am) -16

this is 2 of the examples

Use date with time as 12/2/10 19:00 and 12/3/10 3:00
    and formula will be
    (finish-start)*24
    It will display 10
