MySQL ODBC DSN Connection Working but not Working

I downloaded the plugin off MySQL's site which allows you to setup a connection to a MySQL database from within Excel and get all the data displayed dynamically in a spreadsheet. It is available from here: http://www.mysql.com/products/connector/.

Okay, so I managed to do this. Works absolutely fine, however when I save and close the workbook and then reopen it, my stored connection no longer works. I've tried everything. Clicking on the refresh button does absolutely nothing and I am completely powerless. I can't even seem to set up a new data connection. I have to create a brand new workbook and do the same thing again.

It's weird because the connection works first time after I've immediately set up the connection. Close the workbook, reopen it and it's completely unresponsive — I am unable to update the table in the spreadsheet.

Can anybody help me with this very strange problem?

What plug-in are you referring to?

The link you posted is for MySQL connectors.

Yes, and that's what I'm using in Microsoft Excel to dynamically display the data from my MySQL database. It's the ODCB one, found here: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/.

I followed this guide to do it: http://helpdeskgeek.com/office-tips/excel-to-mysql/. It would be useful if someone who has a MySQL database could kindly follow these steps to see if they have the same problem.

I've got an ODBC connection to a table in a database in MySQL and can't replicate the behaviour you describe.

Is MySQL definitely running when it happens?

Sorry? I connect to a database on my hosting account, not locally.

It's confusing because it works first time. But I'm trying to figure out what causes the connection to break and become unresponsive when I quit the workbook and reopen it. It doesn't make sense.

I have MySQL set up locally and it runs in the background.

If you are connecting to a remote database that could be the problem.

That cannot be the issue because when I connect to a local Access database the exact same problem occurs.

I'm just going to try the same steps on another computer. I'll let you know what happens.

Edit: Yep, it works on my other computer after following the exact same steps. I can close the workbook, reopen it, press on the refresh button and the table updates. So I don't know what the issue could be. Perhaps addons? I'll try disabling them.

Edit: Nope, that doesn't make a difference.
