how to use the row's number in a formula(?)

So far I've been numbering the first row as 1 in some column, then the one below labeling it the cell above "+1", and I'm guessing that that is unnecessary work for my little Droid Eris. Or not? Anyway, I'd rather have more efficient coding. Thanks in advance.

You can use ROWS formula as:

    =ROWS($A$1:$A1)

Also, best would be to place your reference in cell where you using your formula

    like

    =ROWS($S$11:$S11)
