Countif plus an AND statement?

Column A holds the month of an event, column B holds the day of an event. I want to count the number of days that events happen on, in a given month. Two or more events could occur on the same day but should only count as one.

I have =countif(month_range,January) which will return the total number of events in January. So I would now need to subtract any repeat days.

I think there should be a relatively simple solution, but my mind can't find it.

I have uploaded the workbook (it is a Fishing Log/Journal). The worksheet is "Daily Reports" and the area I'm having trouble with is highlighted in Green near the top.
