How to apply conditional formatting to entire row

I have this formula that works right on the cell selected but sometimes the cell next to it can be greater or equal to it... so that one would need to be highlighted as well but it doesn't.... =$C$4>=$D$4:$G$4

    anyone know what I'm missing???

I now have 2007 excel and I had a nother conditional formating on another sheet and it doesn't work right, it did before... I'm supposed to highlight a row only if Yes is selected... and its only selecting that cell. Think both problems are related.

It's the absolute referencing in your formula that is causing your problem.

Which cells are you (potentially) formatting. Can you explain in word what you want it to do?

well if you look at sheet one if you select yes it use to select the whole row... now it doesn't. Only hihghlights column F if you have yes.

and the second sheet named "regions past dues" in row 4 I only want to highlight the greatest # of them all... and if there happen to be two cities that are tie then highlight them both...

I think you have sheet protection password enabled so I can't see the conditional formatting but on Loans sheet you can select the entire table, i.e.B3:G28 and then use this formula in conditional formatting

    =$F3="Yes"

    Note the $

for the other sheet select C4:G4 and use

    =C4=MAX($C4:$G4)

but you want to highlight the whole row in that case? In what way does it not work? Are cells highlighted that shouldn't be, or vice versa?

highlight the whole row if Yes is selected... and if no is selected leave as is. Its not working because all that is happening is that the word yes is being highlighted not the row.

It should work if applied as I suggested.

You need to select the whole range including all columns that you want highlighted, e.g. B3:G28 then apply the formula

    =$F3="Yes"

Re: How to apply conditional formatting to entire row

Okay the formula works but only once.... lets say I don't have any conditional formatting and some of the answers are already Yes.

Then if I place the conditional formatting like I want to it works but if one of those answers in column F are "no" and I change that to a "YES" it only highlights that cell not the row. or if it has a "YES" then if I put a "no" it only unhighlights that cell not the row...

hmmm, don't know what would cause that....conditional formatting can be a little "temperamental". Can you posted an unprotected workbook?

Re: How to apply conditional formatting to entire row

I think that this occurs because of the dropdown list. If I type in "Yes" rather than selecting from the dropdown then it works.....

A workaround would be to force a cell change when you select Yes so you could utilise your (almost) hidden column (or another). For example in H3 put this formula

    =F3="Yes"

    copy that down to H28

Now change the conditional formatting formula to just

    =$H3

That seems to work, if I pick "Yes" from one of the dropdowns the whole row chnages, if I then select "No" it changes back.....

Thanks!!! I think it has something to do with the versions because I try it on excel 2003 which is where I created it and it works fine but if I switch to 2007 it doesn't...
