    Possible Countif

So I think this should be a no brainer for you guys!

    I have a column with a letter and a number together - like this - E15, M17, O12 and so on.

I have another column with a percentage.

I want to perform a Count of each letter (the number doesn't matter, I just need to know how often each letter shows up), so E, M, O, etc. under a certain percentage.

My first thought is to use a Countif, but I can't figure it out with the condition of being under 40%.

Thanks! Let me know if more info will help....

Re: Possible Countif - quick help!

It sounds to me that you want a countif with multiple criteria (If Column A contains the letter "E" and column B <40%).

See this link for instructions on how to do that. http://www.ozgrid.com/Excel/count-if.htm

    My first recommendation is DCOUNT.

I what I am struggling with is how to define my criteria for my column with the letter and number data. So, how do I call out the first letter as the criteria?

    Maybe following will help

Adapt the ranges to your needs making sure they have the same length, and of course the lookup value

If as implied by profile you're using XL2007 use COUNTIFS

obviously references to letters etc can be replaced with cell references containing the same

    Hmm, I'm getting #VALUE. I'm using '08 actually.

    Re: Possible Countif

Could you post a sample file to illustrate the above ?
The formula as posted should not return #VALUE!, however, XL2008 is not exactly bug free

possible what you are looking for in attached file:
    column A is your entry
column B you define which letter you want to make
    percentage
column C will show percentage of that letter to all
    letters in column A
    thanks
