Conditional formatting for Stacked Bar Chart

    Dear All,

    I'm in a bit of a dillema here, would be great to have your help;

I have a dataset which looks like this (a .xls file is also attached):

Researcher - Rec. Ppt - Start - Duration - Type of Researcherer
    1 IHEID 4 21 ESR
    2 ULB 12 22 ER
    3 UW 17 19 ESR

I'm working with a stacked bar chart (making a Gantt chart through it). I want two different colors for the "Type of Researcher"; Red for ESR, and Blue for ER. The problem i'm facing is that i can't make the legend to show that. Whenever i try doing that my actual chart starts to change. The way i do is Right-Click on chart>Source Data>Series, but it doesn't work somehow. I just want my legend to have ESR and ER, with the colors red and blue in their respective boxes.

Any kind of suggestion/advice would be much appreciated.

    Cheers!

PS: The .xls data file is attached.

You need to have a stack of 3 series rather than 2.
The first is still the padding value in order to mimic the floating bar.

The second and third series are based on a test of the researcher type. Either a value or #N/A is used for each data point.

Re: Conditional formatting for Stacked Bar Chart

Sorry to bother regarding this seemingly basic question, but how do i get the numbers on my x-axis to be vertical instead of being horizontal?
When i try changing the alignment of the x-axis it changes the alignment of the Recruiting Participant.

    Many thanks!

do you want the actual numbers to just be vertical (turned 90 degrees?) ... double click on the x axis, click the alignment tab, and change the Orientation to 90 degrees

    Thanks tech!

I tried that earlier, and when i do that it tilts the "Recruiting Participant" 90 degrees, not the number itself. I just want the number to be changed? Any hints?

When an axis has multi level labelling only the inner most labels are affected by the alignment property.

You will need to use a set of cells to build the concatenated category labels and then alter the chart to use the new range.
