Automatically numbering non-contiguous cells?

Hello Excel Genii,

The attached spreadsheet shows an example of the type data I'm working with. I have a large number of sets of data; the sets have a title (e.g. in column B), with further data in columns C and D.

My question is simply this: is there a way of automatically numbering these sets of data, e.g. automatically populating the numbers currently in column A? The problem obviously is that they're non-contiguous.

Additional question: it'd be great if I could not only number them automatically (e.g. "1, 2, 3"), but be able to specify further characters to appear so that the result was e.g. ("GS1, GS2, GS3")

Not entirely sure I follow but perhaps:

I'd suggest using the 000 approach for sake of consistency (ie GS004 < GS020 whereas GS4 > GS20)
