how to automatically add more digits

Hi there I have a list of hundreds of account numbers and to make things easier for the person who will upload them into the system they need to be 16 digits long. an account number can be 4-16 digits long for those that are less than 16 we need zeros in front. Is there a way we can all loan #'s in column A have all the digits needed in column b?

Have you tried formatting the cells?

Format Cells..... Number > Custom

Thanks, it works. The only thing about that is that since the account numbers are already typed there it won't format like you suggested. I copy and paste and it doesn't work either...

in another column put=text(a1,"000000000000000") drag down the copy paste special values over the original
