I have a last name in cell A#1 in column D I have first and lasnt names. In column e I have a category for each person.
How do I write a vlookup formula looking up the last name withing the first and last name giving me the value in column E???

Try
=VLOOKUP("*"&A1&"*",D:E,2,FALSE)
