Convert date from date format to number format

I have where a user has entered a date and I'd like the cell to then be converted to a number format so that I can use it in my parameter query.

For example, in one cell I have '12/15/2010' and in another cell I'd like to see the date as '20101215' so that this second cell can be used as a parameter query that I'm getting from my sql database. For some reason excel parameter query does not recognize a cell with 'date' format.
