Adding working cell to a previous cell

Didn't know what to call this thread..

    A quick history.

In CELL C3 I have my starting issue for a novelty product. (25 boomarings)

In CELL C4 I have the amount returned (not sold = 15)

    In CELL C5 I have amount sold ( 10 )

In CELL C6 I have the payout amount.

    HERE'S MY PROBLEM / QUESTION!

In CELL D3 I have the number of BOOMARINGS issued at the start of the next day
(sometimes I do not sell enough to have more issued to me)

I'd like to ADD CELL D3 (ISSUE ) with CELL C4 (RETURNED) since CELL D3 plus CELL C4 would be my TOTAL AMOUNT of boomarings for the next day. But when I try to do the formula
=SUM(D3+C4) I get a CIRCULAR ERROR or something of that nature.

    Thanks for any help.

You get the circular reference because you are trying to add something to yourself.

ex) in cell A1 i say add whatever is in A1 +1, well it would be A1+1, but now A1=(A1+1) so i would have to add 1 to that...(A1+1)+1, but i gotta add 1 again ((A1+1)+1)+1 and now you are just in a big loop and smoke is coming out of your computer

luckily excel recognizes this and says nope, you can't do that please try again

so normally you would create another column. say E3, so it would be your starting inventory + left over from the previous day. Can you work with that? If it doesn't help try posting your worksheet and we'll come up with something

    Thanks TechRetard,

Understand what you're saying. I have been manually adding the numbers in my head and typing them in, which I don't doing, it's just easier to have someone else doing it for ya.

So basically your saying have 3 columns: COLUMN C FOR RETURN. COLUMN D FOR STARTING INVENTORY. COLUMN E IS THE TOTAL SUM. Is that what you mean?

There are always multiple ways to do something, when it doubt, drink a beer.

Yeah that's pretty much what I'm doing. I've settled on something like this.
