conditional formating on cells based on another cell colour

    hi

i want to do some conditional formating/automation on a table. here are my conditions

    column A has two rows.

column B - H have two coloumns with two rows each, and a 'check mark' in one of the rows (matching column A's rows)

I want to be able to put a cell colour in one of the rows in column A, that will automatically fill up the 'check marked' row (with a number or icon) in the second column (B - H).

difficult to explain but I hope someone can figure what I am asking. I can give a sample of my xlsx if possible on this site.

what i have is a sports pool going on -

    column A has two teams
column B has each participants choice with a 'check mark' as the choice indicator.

    Hi tubells,

Is this what you were talking about? It is very hard to understand without a sample file. See if the attached works for youj.

Re: conditional formating on cells based on another cell colour

    hi marvin,
    thanks for making that file.

here is what I want to do. (see below).
column B (where I have the choice of teams),
columns C, E & G (where i have the person choosing putting a check mark against column one row ie team A or team B)
    columns D, F & H - score - This I want to auto populate.

after the result of a game, I want to fill(colour) a row in column B (team A or team B) and I then want the matching rows in columns D, F & H (score column) where a check mark is there, to automatically be filled with a value (number).

hope this makes it clear. I have not figured out how to attach a sample spreadsheet to this site yet.

bob score fred score mary score
    team a X X
    team b X
    team c X X
    team d X

    total

    Hey tubells,

The file you attached isn't even close to what you discribed. Did you have a question that we can follow?

Re: conditional formating on cells based on another cell colour

    hi marvin,

sorry my description was bad. I will try again.
In the NEW file (teampicks1.xlsx) I attached, I have :

Column B - Name of teams - highlighted and bold bordered each match
Column C, E, G - Players in the pool - Choices marked with an 'X' for each player for each match

    Column D, F, H - Score column

    What I want to do

    IF
I fill B3 cell with red colour,
    THEN
Check if C3 has an X in it
    If it does
    THEN
    Put value '4' in D3
    ELSE
    Put value '0' in D3
    If
Check if C4 has an X in it
    If it does
    THEN
    Put value '4' in D4
    ELSE
    Put value '0' in D4

    Repeat for all Cells

Finally total scores in D13, F13 and H13 and next conditional formating - Put a certain colour for the highest score (i think i can do part...)

    thanks

I hope this makes sense. and thanks marvin for taking the time to figure this and help.

Re: conditional formating on cells based on another cell colour

    Hi tubells,

One of the formum gurus had this saying "Formats aren't data" or something like that. It is way too hard to test of background colors to key on. I put the word "Win" next to the teams that won and did your problem that way. See if you can live with it this way.

Funny - Because I was reading your post on my WM7 phone, I thought you said you were using a WC 2011 Cricket (new type of computer). I thought it was a slate or iPad type of device. I read your "For" as an "On".

I guess I need to update my reading glasses so I don't sound to stupid.
