Calculating orders in one column based on dates in a second column

I have two columns, one is a list of dealers and the second is a list of install dates (example: 3/08/2011). I have been trying to write a forumla for a summary table that would calculate total orders by month for each dealer. Everyone keeps telling me to use a pivot table but that is not working either. That only list each install date and will not group them by month. HELP!!

Have a look here on how to group dates in Pivot tables by months, etc...

When I put the data in a pivot table and attempt to group the dates it does not give me the month, week, etc options. It only shows the following options:

    Sum
    Count
    Average
    Max
    Min
    Product

It does not provide a grouping by month option

Do you have the dates in the Row Area of the Pivot table?

You should be able to right click any of the dates in the pivot table, and select Group... then pick Months.

If you still have difficulty, post a sample workbook with your pivot table and source data....
