Excel 2007 : Looking up criteria and a value

Please help
a sheet has a column with names that are duplicated and i want to lookup a specific name and get the value attached to that name from another column

Please help with a formula to do the following: -

I need to look up a name of a person in a column which can be duplicated and apply a value to the name from another coulumn
eg john in column a appears a few times but I need to attached a value to John from another column
eg all the 2's in the other column must be attached to John all the 3's and so on.

I need an excel 2007 formula to calculate the following:
The count of a specific number appearing in a column related to the name of a person in another column to be brought across to another sheet
e.g

column A column B
John 2
Paul 2
John 2
Peter 2
Paul 3
John 3

Therefore I need to count all the 2's for John

Try a pivot table.

Then drag the Column A and Column B headers to the Row data area and drag the Column B to the Sum Data area and change to COUNT of Column B....
