How to create an average based on letters?

    Hi all...

WOndering if you Excel experts could help please? I have a formula which outputs a letter to a Cell, this is spread across 10 cells. What I would then like to do is average those cells to a different cell. The outputs of those 10 cells are alphabetical - and the average would need to be alphabetical also?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

I think you need to give us an example or two. I don't see how you can average cells that are not numbers.

Re: How to create an average based on letters?

Thanks for your reply - ok so an example being:

Cell A1 - A10 - =IF......"M","L")) These cells contain the formula to input an M or an L
Cell A15 - I want this cell to average cells A1-A10 which are either M or L

    Does this help?

    Thanks

    Not really,

So if A1:A10 contains the values M,M,M,L,L,M,L,L,L,M
what should the average be and why?
If by 'average' you mean the arithmetic mean, then this is a mathematical concept and uses numbers not letters.

I tested the mode formula and it errord. Im guessing this is because the cell I am questioning for the mode is made up of a formula which results in a given number/letter - would this be correct? Thanks

Please don't edit posts and remove meaningful information. There may be others following this thread and be confused because of it.

The details you removed explained that you were not in fact looking for an average as you had been saying all the way through but the M or L letter with the majority of values in A1:10.

    Regards

Sorry - I thought I didnt explain myself properly and rather than add multiple posts I thought it best to edit a current one to stop confusion - apologies again.
