    Generating a filtered table

I have a table that is as follows: names of students across the top. To the right of the names are the following column headers: category, type, year. Along the Y-axis, the items are classes, such as French, English, Physical Education, and Chemistry. In the table, there are X's to show which classes each student is taking, and under category, type, and year, there are respective descriptions (e.g. French would be Language, Advanced, 8).

On a separate tab, what I'd like to do is have a dropdown menu so you can select one of the student names, and it will create a table that shows that he is taking Algebra, French, English, and PE. The table should also show the category, type, and length. Ideally, I'd like there to be another dropdown (e.g. category) from there so I can filter the data even further (or as an alternative way to the student name). Can someone please show me how to do this in Excel 2003? Thanks!

    Vermont,

sounds like a Pivot table would do what you require, you will find it under "Data".

Jamesr571, thanks! Do you know if there is a way to do this with vlookup and/or data validation? I thought I did something like this a very long time ago, but for the life of me I can't remember how. I'm not familiar with data tables, so I'll play around with it for now.

    Vermont,

It would be possible with Vlookup & data validation depending on the table, do you have an example you can attach so I can look at it in more detail?

    Vermont,

I have used the HLOOKUP formula in order to get what I believe it is you need. I have also used VLOOKUP for the category, year, etc.

For the VLOOKUP to work you will need the classes in Alphabetical order.

Please check the sheet named "Results & change the name in the pull down box to test it is what you need.

    Hope this helps.
