    Welcome to the forum.

What type of file are you trying to open?

What version of Excel was it saved with?

    What have you tried?

I'm trying to open excel files with .xlsl extensions, I believe they were all on excel 2007. I've tried:
    (i) downloading from microsoft upgrades for file compatibility didn't work
(ii) tried changing extension to .xls, didn't work
Problem is it affects many excel files and not just one, which I could have lived with - this makes me believe that it's a software issue and not a file corruption.

There is no xlsl extension; you mean xlsx? That's the native file format for workbooks without macros in Excel 2007+.

Changing the files extension is the reason you got the message you did.

How well are other Office 2007 apps working?

I'd either repair or reinstall Excel.

I use Microsoft Excel 2007. I have a file that I opened and used yesterday that will not open today. The file extension is xlsx. I have other files with the same extension that will open. Today the system tells me it canot oen the file because the file format or the file extension is not valid. ??

sounds like it was saved with the wrong extension. are you sure it isn't a .xls file, or .xlsm?

The file was created in xlsx format. I have several other files in this same format that work just fine. Is it possible that because I renamed the file in the My Documents section of Excel that when I go to open it in the current listing it no longer matches the file name in history? I cannot open either version of this file now. I changed the label back and that did not help either.

If you changed the name the system would tell you it can't find it when you try and open it from a list. it sounds to me as though you may have changed the extension when you renamed it.
