Index Match Combination for two variables

Hi,

Having some trouble combining if and index and match to find a value in something like the following:

cow pig dog
a 2 4 6
b 66 55 44
c 23 32 79
d 11 14 111
e 3 4 5

After my dutiful google searching, the best thing I found was an array formula something like this: =INDEX($C$2:$C$5,MATCH(D2,IF($B$2:$B$5=E2,$A$2:$A$5),0))

But when I tried to apply it, it wasn't working out. Basically what I want is the person to input an a-e and a cow, pig, or dog, and then to spit out the assigned value.
