    Otimizing from a list

So I have a problem that I can't figure out on excel. I have a list of "parts", with associated surface areas assigned to each one, depending on the width and length of the "part". These have to go on particular trays which have a defined length-width area.

I have figured out how to have excel pick from this list to best fill each tray with the parts. However, the method I'm using (based on a spreadsheet i found here), gives priority to the first parts on the list, and then goes down the list to fill any remaining spots.

It does not optimize by length and width to make sure that the parts actually fit.

Is there any way, using excel, that this can be done? This may be asking for too much from Excel, given that it has to figure out the different combination of parts on each tray based on 3 variables. But any pointers would be helpful (including, any other software or method available for doing this)

Attached is a small version of the list.

    Thank you for your help

    Re: Otimizing from a list

I forgot to say, I ran it through solver first, of course, but I can only do it by controlling for area and minimizing the number of trays. I get the same number of trays, but the issue is how to incorporate width and length.

    Thanks again
