    Going mad with rankings

    Hello,

I'm just a casual user as a hobby, but I've hit a brick wall in some calculations I want to do.

I've set up a sheet for football (soccer) matches between 6 teams in a league.
I enter the game results and a league table updates automatically.
I can rank the teams on number of points.
I can rank the teams on goal difference (seperately).
So I have the data on both of these things.

However, if two teams have the same number of points, but one team has a better goal difference (scored versus conceded), I'd like to have a column showing this as a complete ranking. I've tried various methods which looked like they worked, and then in further testing, a problem pops up if a team has less points but a huge goal difference, they are considered top in the rankings which is obviously wrong.

This is all being done in the formula bar in excel 97.

I hope that all makes sense.
