excel can't read exported excel file

I have a crystal report that I routinely run and export to an excel format. (it carries the .xls extension)

I have a summary excel WB that is linked to the exported file(s). The summary WB cannot read the exported files unless I first open and resave them as the same file name and extension.

Anyone know why this is or if an upgrade (which we might get next decade) will correct this?

I don't know why this is, but let me know if you'd like a code to automate opening, resaving and then closing all the Excel files in the reporting directory.

Thanks, I can create that code myself. There is an exported file for every month (12) plus a million formulas in the workbook. It takes several minutes to calculate upon opening and the user will go berserk on me if I code it to open and save 12 files each time he opens the file.

If there's no other solution, he's simply going to have to remember to open and save each month when he creates his export! (The real solution is to put his summary data in Crystal and stop using Excel but he's not ready for that brave new world yet!)

I agree - though I'm not ready to say there's no other solution yet. Alternatively, you could code the procedure to turn off screen updates and calculation until after file saves are accomplished. Just a thought.
