Add specific columns

I have a column that I want to place a "X" in some of the cells. This is a way to id certain rows. At the bottom of the column I want know how many cells in that column contain the "X". I know I could put the number "1" instead of the "X" and just total the column, but I do not want to do that. I want it to be able to put an "X" or some other letter in the cell and have the total number of cells with the "X" appear at the bottom.

Wow-Norman B and Abousetta - that is EXACTLY the question I had and the reason I joined the forum just a minute ago. Thanks for that answer. Love Excel. Much more complex a tool than it appears at first glance (using it for 20 years and just discovering that 2nd layer of functionality beyond the basics).

Hi,

On the original post, click the Edit button --> Go Advanced --> select [SOLVED] from the Prefix dropdown --> Save Changes
