    File is locked for Editing

I have Excel 2000. I am using Windows 7. I have been recording my golf scores for 14 weeks with only 2 weeks to go and now my spreadsheet will not open. I get 2 messages. The first is a box titled file in use with the message that the file, Summary for 2011, is locked for editing.by Karen. Click Notify to open a read-only copy of the document and receive notification when the document is no longer in use.” It is not in use that I can tell. How did it get locked and how do I unlock it? My second message when I click one of the choices is Microsoft Excel has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working and will have to shut down. I have been able to open a similar file, Summary for 2010. and my golf roster without a problem. Unfortunately I made the mistake of not backing up this file

Excel thinks the workbook is already open, possibly Excel crashed leaving a hidden copy. Have you tried rebooting the computer or Ctrl+Alt+Delete to see if it is actually open?
    Hope that helps.
