    Gridlines

    Win 7 home premium
    Office 2003
    Canon MP830

in file > page setup > sheet >

the only way I can get the gridlines to appear in the print preview (& on the actual printout) is to have 'row & column headings' (1,2,3,....A,B,C,etc) checked, but I don't want them to print out.

if i have it unchecked then only SOME of the gridlines show in the print preview. Ditto if I have none of the options checked or only 'gridlines' checked - different sets of gridlines visible & if I check 'draft quality' only, then none of the gridlines appear in print preview regardless of what other options I've selected

    confused? join the club!!

the strange thing (well, one of the strange things) is that a colleague printed the same sheets without the row & column headings (different printer). knowing her, she's got default settings
    1. Is there some interaction between different printer models & excel's own settings/options?
    2. How can i get round the problem i've described above?
please help while i've still got some hair left!! :-)

    Thanks, Jeff

    Re: Gridlines

Open the sheet in PrintPreview. Click Setup then sheet. You can set gridlines to print there
    Hope that helps.

Good, but it doesn't for me!

I don't know if this is relevant:
with the spreadsheet open i went tools > options > view & unchecked the gridlines box, to see what would happen, clicked OK & exited - absolutely nothing changed......the gridlines were still visible, even after I closed & then reopened excel.

    ????????????

Any suggestion or insights much welcomed.

    TIA,
    Jeff

    Re: Gridlines

Okay, I'm going to step back a bit to make sure I understand this correctly.

The Problem: You want to print gridlines (and to see them in Print Preview) but, even though in Page Setup > Sheet> Print Gridlines is checked off. Is that about the size of it?

only SOME of the gridlines show in the print preview
This can happen based on monitor resolution. Also your gridlines will only show down to the end of your used range. So if you're only using 4 rows, only those gridlines will appear on your sheet even though there's room for lots more rows on your paper.

    Does any of this help?

    Yes, that's the problem.
    • If draft quality is checked = no gridlines visible at all....understandable, saving ink
    • Nothing checked = some gridlines (a seemingly random selection)
    • Only 'gridlines' checked = ditto
    • Only 'row & colum headings' or 'row & colum headings' + 'gridlines' checked = gridlines visible but with all the row & colum headings

I’ve attached a couple of screenshots – one showing how it looks with only ‘gridlines’ checked (same result as not checking anything) & one with 'gridlines' & 'row & column headings' checked (same result if only 'row & column headings' is checked).

In other words, the only way to see all the gridlines in print preview, or on printout, is to have row & column headings also. This isn't a massive problem, but I prefer to print without & I know from past use that it doesn't have to be the case.

In the end I got round it by copying all the data from the spreadsheet I'd been sent, & was having the difficulty with, into a new workbook. It worked fine & it was a solution of sorts, but I'd still like to know what was going on................? (I don’t like to be beaten by a computer!)

I don’t think it’s screen resolution (a) because I got round it as I’ve described above & (b) I’d seen it on my colleagues screen before she printed it & it was ok.

    Thanks

Any further ideas (from anyone) welcomed
    Jeff
