    *Shade* alternating rows

I have colors set up to partition the columns BUT I would like to shade alternating rows for visibility purposes **that do not change the color of the columns**.

That is, I want the rows to be a lighter color or darker color of the column color.

Since excel doesn't allow an alpha channel in the color selection for the normal method I'm not sure how to go about this.

    For example,

if column 1 is red and column 2 is green I would like the the even rows to be c1=red, c2=green while the odd rows has c1=lightred, c2= lightgreen.

It will probably require a macro if it is even possible. I would like it to always work because I will be added and removing colors and columns constantly and I don't want to execute a macro every time.

Deleted since my request seemed offensive

    Re: *Shade* alternating rows

    wtf?

Columns are made up of rows? That makes no sense. (maybe that's how excel internally defines them but there is no mathematical reason to give rows preference)

Both columns and rows can have colors. Obviously one will take precedence since excel doesn't "mix" or "blend" the colors.

My example should be clear but I guess some people require an image.

In my example I do not want the rows to change the "color"... just the shade/lightness.

In fact I would like to set the shade/lightness for a set of rows.

The point is that I want the rows to use the columns color and only modify the RGB slightly to get a different appearance for "visual partitioning" reasons.

Hi Bob. Try this: Color Cell A2 Dark Red, A3 Light Red, B2 Dark Green and B3 Light Green then run this code...does it do what you want?

    Re: *Shade* alternating rows

gjlindin: it didn't do anything. But even if it did work I do not think it will do what I want.

Basically I just want to "shade" rows at will and to have alternating shading(the standard thing that makes adjacent rows must easier to distinguish).

Basically I will only be coloring the columns. I'll have some columns blue, others red, etc... I'll probably be changing this a lot because I'll be inserting and deleting rows and adding and removing colors.

Normally the way I'd do this is to simply get the RGB color of the current column(might have to use a template row to define the color) then simply adjust the alpha channel/transparency of the row depending on some value or user input.

It's quite easy to accomplish normally... I doubt excel would make it easy. Maybe an "addin" is required ;/

try conditional format and pick and choose were you want it --- check out this file using conditional format

sorry ---- I had a condition in the format that was not needed --- this file is better

    Re: *Shade* alternating rows

grizzly: But I cannot change the column colors and it change the rows.

I only want to be able to change the column colors and the rows simply shade the column color.

If I have to manually update the rows every time I change a column it becomes counter productive(after all, it's just aesthetics anyways).

This is how I want the stuff to behave:

    1. Columns set colors
    2. Rows set opacity/alpha channel/transparency. ***I DO NOT WANT ROWS TO SET THE COLOR!!!***.

(Colors are generally expressed as RGB and the alpha channel is A. Color is distinct from alpha. Hence I want the rows to only effect A and the columns to effect RGB. Obviously if you don't have A you have to "emulate" it in some way which means the rows do have to effect RGB... only technically though)

    Re: *Shade* alternating rows

    I don't understand the question.

If you know how to do alternate-row shading, then you know how to set the conditional formatting; you just need to apply conditional formatting differently in alternating columns. All that leaves is choosing the colors.

Are you asking how to compute an RGB color with the same hue and saturation as another RGB color, but with different luminance?

Thread closed, you obviously struggle with the word "Thanks" & seem to think you know better than everyone else who has answered so far.
    Hope that helps.
