Split cells without changing overall width of print area?

Just wondering if it's possible to split columns in Excel without loosing the overall width of the print area? I've carefully made the print area fit perfectly to an A4 print sheet, but I find I'm in need of adding extra columns in the sheet. But just adding a new column kinda ruins the perfectly aligned print area. So, if I could select a column and split in half, that would solve my problem. Is this possible?

which version of excel are you using?

I tend not to worry about the actual width of the page, then when it comes to printing i use the "scale to fit" options on the print settings.

I'm using Excel 2007. But I actually found a way of doing this using macro, seems to work pretty well actually
